By day I am a Staff Scientist at a high tech company outside of Boston, Massachusetts. By early morning, evening and on the weekends I am a swimmer (among other things).
My swimming career began when I was two and drove my plastic wheelbarrow into my grandmother's pool; the next day I began formal swimming lessons. By age 5 I was swimming competitively and by age 9 I decided competitive swimming was not for me. Over the next several years I spent a good amount of time in the ocean and in pools- but just for fun. I played water polo in high school and then began swimming laps when I started graduate school. When I moved to California upon graduation I began open water swimming.
Being back in the open ocean reminded me of a goal I had set when I was 14 and learned that it was possible to do crazy open water swims - it reminded me that I wanted to swim the English Channel.
Some life changes - switching jobs, moving back to the East Coast, getting married and having a baby - inhibited me from immediately attempting my goal. However, now, after a couple years of training, and with the support of my wife and son, and my coach and friend, Andrew, I plan to attempt the English Channel in September 2010.
